It was 1986 – There was a need felt at the reorganized Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) for a flagship company which would set new standards in drama.
The dream was for “a national theater that would develop original Filipino plays, present zarzuelas, comedies, and tragedies,” recalls Nicanor G. Tiongson, then Vice-President and Artistic Director of the CCP. At the same time, translations of foreign works were targeted to enrich the group’s perspective and theatrical style. Thus, in 1987, Tanghalang Pilipino was born.
This publication is an account of the group’s triumphs and challenges; of the zarzuelas, plays, musicals that have been staged offerings to include even local pop culture icons. Tanghalang Pilipino: 25 Years of Philippine Theater gives one an insider’s view on the translations of foreign plays to Filipino; on light, set, and costume design; on the veterans in the group who have stayed with it for the last 25 years, and expect to do so for many more.
